Schmalkalden
Schmalkalden is situated at the south west hillside of the Thuringian forest, approximately 9kilometers distance to the Rennsteig (on of the most famous Hiking trail in Germany). Schmalkalden is furthermore situated in the valley of the rivers Stille and Schmalkalden, surrounded by forests and meadows.
The medieval marked city centre consists of nearly 90% half-timbered buildings from the
16th –18th century. Furthermore it shows the “Steinerne Kemenaten”, the city hall from 1419, the late gothic church St. Georg and a nearly complete preserved castle ground of the German renaissance- “Schloss Wilhelmsburg” (build from 1585- 1590).
In the medieval these special buildings made Schmalkalden to one of the most famous cities in Germany and Europe.
Ore body, mining and iron working handcraft were the base for a growing economy.
Cultural centre of the city is “Schloss Wilhlemsburg” with organ recital, lectures and exhibitions.
