Meiningen

The castle of Meiningen is directly situated in the city centre, only short walking distance from the market place. It was build by Herzog Bernhard I, who decided to give the castle the name of its second wife. The foundation stone of this imposing rotunda was set on June 26th in 1682; all costs have to be paid by the population.
Dukes of Sachsen- Meiningen lived there for more than 238 years. A majestic cultivated courtyard with a stone-made fountain topped the general view of the residence.
Today the city council as well as the archives of city, state and district are located in this unique building.
The public museums of Meiningen offers a diversified exhibition on two floors - Visitors can choose between the natural science and historical exhibition and the ducal art collection (with more than 500 paintings from Europe and more than one thousand graphics) with historic furniture.
